What is the difference between MCAS and MOS?

On 2 June 2010, the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) was formally renamed Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) worldwide.  The programme’s name change will NOT include any programme requirement or exam content changes.

Are there any changes to exam objectives or item content from MCAS to MOS?

No, the rebrand only impacts the name of the programme. MCAS will now be known as MOS.  However, there are now two Expert exams for Word and Excel.

Are there any changes to exam requirements from MCAS to MOS?

No, the rebrand only impacts the name of the program.  However, now that Expert exams have been introduced for both Excel and Word, you now have to pass both of these as well as PowerPoint and one elective in order to gain the Master certificate.

Is the MCAS credential now deemed expired or obsolete for those currently holding the credential?

No, all individuals who have earned the MCAS certification in the past will be considered holders of the MOS 2007 certification. They may choose to use the MOS 2007 designation on business cards or any other personal effects. MCAS certification holders should consider themselves “grand-fathered” into the MOS 2007 certification programme.

Can MCAS credential holders replace their MCAS Certificate with an MOS 2007 Certificate?

After the exam, can I have my exam reviewed by an administrator/adjudicator if I had concerns about the validity of any particular question(s)?

You cannot have your exam reviewed by us as we have no access to the exam taken by yourself.  However you are welcome to contact Certiport directly via your account.

After the exam, is there any feedback?

You will receive a report which gives your final score and a list of the 4 or 5 main areas covered in the exam. You will see your percentage score for each of these areas. The report does not provide details of specific questions or answers.

If I am entitled to a re-take voucher, does the re-sit have to take place within a given timeframe?  Or, if I pass first time, can the re-take option be used for another exam?

The re-take voucher will be issued to you by Certiport, with an expiry date which is usually one month from the date you failed your exam. It can only be used for the SAME application.

If you pass the exam a retake voucher is NOT issued so there is no voucher to be used.

Yes, you can skip questions in the live exams, They are automatically added to the end of the exam (except for Vista/Adobe where you have to go into a menu screen). Please ensure that you press Skip and not Next, as pressing Next will register the question as complted and it will not appear again.

Am I allowed to have notebooks or study aids at the exam station whilst the exam is in progress?

No, you are being examined on your knowledge of the programme, so nothing is allowed in the room.

During the exam, will I be in the room on my own or with other people?

Normally you will be on your own. If there is exceptional demand for exams, you may be taking your exam at the same time as other people.

At all times, exam candidates are monitored by CCTV and should follow our exam rules, which are displayed in the room and provided to all candidates who book an exam with us.

In the event that I fail my exam, Certiport may issue me a ‘re-sit voucher.’  Does the re-sit voucher have to be used to book a re-take at the original testing centre or can it be used at any testing centre in the UK?

You can sit the re-sit your exam anywhere using the exam voucher you have been issued with by Certiport.

All centres charge a Proctor Fee. Our Proctor Fee is £25+VAT for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) and IC3 exams.

The Proctor Fee is £30+VAT for ACA exams.

Is there any indication of how many marks are available for correct answers on each question?

Do all questions carry equal marks?

Some questions are worth more marks than others, as some questions have more than one task to be completed.  You will not be told how many marks each question is worth during the exam. We would advise you to answer each question to the best of your ability in the time allowed.

Prior to starting the actual exam questions, what can I expect?

Before the exam starts, there are 4 or 5 information screens to read through, telling you about the layout of the exam and giving you tips on how to answer.  The administrator who logs you on to the exam software will also be available to answer your questions before the exam starts.

If I experience technical difficulties with my exam, how would this be dealt with?

If the exam crashes, we will be able to re-start the exam from the point where you had reached prior to the crash, with no time lost. You can then continue with the exam as normal.

In the event of a fail, if the crash is a software fault you will need to contact Certiport on their website

If for any reason there is a fault with our computer which has resulted in a fail or you being unable to sit the exam, you will not have to pay the proctor fee for the re-take.

If I fail my exam, will the re-take consist of the same or different questions?

All exams consist of random questions, so each exam should be different. However, some questions may be similar to those which you have seen before.
